High Fiber Diabetic Diet for Diabetics
Type II diabetes or NIDDM (non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) is closely related to obesity and overweight. A good percentage of individuals suffering fro type II diabetes are obese or overweight. It is also proved that by healthy diabetic diet and regular exercise if the body weight is maintained to normal the risk of developing the disease (type II diabetes) can be reduced or prevented or delayed. Although genetics play an important role in the causation of type II diabetes (NIDDM), obesity also play a vital role in causation of type II diabetes. For type I diabetes the body weight does not play an important role in its causation and many of the patients with type I diabetes are lean and thin or underweight.
High fiber diets can reduce the incidence of type II diabetes mellitus by keeping the body weight under control (as obesity or overweight is one of the common causes of type II diabetes). Many studies were conducted to which shows that change of dietary habit (diet of high fiber content and lower calorie diets) and lifestyle (healthy lifestyle with proper diet and regular physical activities and exercise) can reduce the incidences of type II diabetes to a large extent.
It is important to change or modify the whole diet instead of focusing on certain diet or a group of foods that may be beneficial to the individuals. In many studies it was found that people with highest contents of whole grains, fruits, nuts, low-fat dairy and vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables) as is common practice in developing countries, were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who ate the lowest amounts of these foods (as is common practice in many developed countries). In the same studies it was seen that participants whose diets were high in red meat, high fat dairy foods, and refined grains like white bread (all of these foods have low fiber content), beans and tomatoes, the risk of diabetes go up.
