Dosing Instructions of Percocet

As there is some addiction liability of Percocet (with the oxycodone component pf Percocet), it should be taken exactly as prescribed for you. Avoid taking greater amount or double dose of this medication as well as for longer duration than it is prescribed by your doctor. Follow the instruction of your doctor or other health care worker such as pharmacists or follow the instructions written on the medication.

Acetaminophen overdose can cause liver toxicity, especially in individuals with G6PD (Glocose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, an important enzyme in glucose metabolism) deficiency, which is more common among Americans and Europeans. The dose of acetaminophen should not be more than 1000 mg per (1 gram) dose and 4,000 mg (4 gram) per day and the usual dose is 500 mg 3 or 4 times a day. The maximum amount of acetaminophen present in Percocet is of 650 mg (usually 325 mg of acetaminophen is combined with 5 mg of oxycodone). You should know about the amount of drug(s) present in the medication you are prescribed for particular health problem.

You should also follow certain instructions as given to you by your doctor prescribing Percocet for pain relief. Do not use laxative without consulting your doctor while you are on Percocet. Dink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily. You may have withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly withdraw Percocet suddenly, after taking it for long duration and if you have any problem after stopping Percocet, consult your doctor. To prevent withdrawal symptoms of Percocet you may need to taper the dose of Percocet i.e. reduce the dose slowly.

As Percocet is usually taken when required the problem of missed dose is not there, but if you are taking this medicine regularly and miss a dose of it, take it as soon as possible. You should not take Percocet more than required, because overdose can have serious consequences. Overdose of Percocet may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, fainting, coma, pinpoint pupils, breathing problems and may even death in extreme cases.
